Product Piracy

Our mission is to develop the best digital Anti-Counterfeiting Feature on the market

Threat

The supply chain is a massive, global network—a dense, opaque web of relationships among people, legal entities, government bodies, IT databases, mobile devices, and more. No single authority governs this organism; anyone can tap into it. This complexity, coupled with open access, creates an ideal playground for criminals ranging from petty thieves to organized syndicates. Illicit manipulation of branded products—also called “product Piracy” — such as diversion in gray markets, contraband and/or fully counterfeited products—poses a growing financial and reputational risk, as well as revenue loss for brand owners. Largescale productpiracy operations are driven by global organized—crime syndicates, making them difficult to disrupt. Consequently, safeguarding the assets within this ecosystem is of utmost importance for legitimate users.

How to fight against product piracy

The criminal energy of unlawful actors is unlimited. Beside offences by misusing security vulnerabilities, allowing gangsters for re-labelling, dilution, tampering and many more, two main categories of illegitimate activities dominate:

§  Illegal deviation of original products in black markets. By doing so, contraband fees, excise and VAT taxes, sales commissions, insurance contract agreements are misappropriated. To suppress these frauds, Track & Trace technology is a widely deployed technology that brings transparency to every transaction within the supply chain. Each product traveling through the chain carries a unique, machine‑readable code, allowing users to query the issuing authority’s database to verify that the item is exactly what it pretends to be and that it is being sold in the correct market.

§  Sales of fully or partly copied branded products. Therefore, Authentication of original provenance of a branded product is inevitable. Unfortunately, Track & Trace as mentioned above is unsuitable as most Track & Trace codes are two dimensional barcodes, which are easy to copy because no specialized skills are required. Consequently, a dedicated authentication technology is essential to prove the original provenance of the inspected item—this is where Thymaris steps in. By scanning a Track & Trace barcode, e.g. with a smartphone, the unequivocal evidence of a counterfeited product is possible
